Nearly a million private tenants have no home contents cover, a Zurich Insurance survey found.
That's despite the fact that one in three have belongings worth more than £10,000 and some have single items worth over £1,500.
A fifth admitted it would take more than two years to replace all their goods if they were stolen or destroyed by flood or fire.
A third confirmed they could never afford to replace everything.
One in 10 wrongly thought they were covered by their landlord's insurance. Reasons given for not buying insurance included meeting bills or debt payments or splashing out on holidays and clothes.
Zurich manager Steve Gilbert says: "Home insurance is often seen as a non-essential but people need to be aware that not having insurance could cost them dearly - especially if faced with the prospect of replacing all their possessions.
"We urge all renters to consider the risk and see if they can really afford not to be covered."
